Prince Edward Island (PEI)

Prince Edward Island is the landmass filled with white.
This weekend I traveled to Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island (PEI) for a quick Saturday to Sunday morning trip!  PEI is the smallest province in Canada and is home to Anne of Green Gables, great potatoes, and is also the birthplace of Canadian Confederation.

I went to PEI on behalf of Mount Allison's Eco-Action club, to teach students in the University of PEI's Environment Society how to carry out their own Campus Climate Challenge (C3).
I designed the logo!
Last year, the New Brunswick Environmental Trust Fund awarded students of Mount A's Eco-Action a grant to spread C3 to universities throughout the province (and we branched out to PEI and Nova Scotia as well).   An article from the Argosy gives a basic description of the initiative:

"The C3 competition began at Mt. A four years ago as a challenge between residences to see which group of students could reduce their energy consumption the most (per capita) over a one month period. The hope from the challenge is to inspire students to consider how they use energy and whether this can be limited.

Eco-Action representative, Erik Fraser described the challenge in a November [2009] issue of The Argosy, 'Actions on the more traditional end include leaving the lights off in the bathroom, unplugging vending machines, and cutting back showering time. In recent years, other strategies have arisen including unplugging mini-fridges, using drying racks instead of electric dryers, and unplugging electronics when not in use to prevent the effect of phantom appliances (electronics which consume the majority of their energy when not in use: i.e. televisions, stereos, hair straighteners, computer chargers).'"

Even though I have never participated in C3 (I am very excited to in February!), the members of Eco-Action taught me about the the competition and I was able to learn a sufficient amount to teach students at UPEI how to conduct their own program.  Not to mention, I got a free trip to PEI!  All in all, the meeting went really well and the Environment Society members are enthusiastic about launching C3 on their campus.
